GlobeMed is a health equity organization with chapters at universities around the world. At GlobeMed at GW, we ground our global health work in the understanding that marginalized groups have been historically and systemically denied a seat at the table, including with conversations regarding their own health and communities. Through centering the needs and knowledge of marginalized groups and community leaders, we strive to follow an anti-oppressive framework in our work. We commit to sustainable, long-term impact over quick, unsustainable solutions, and we believe long-term relationship building is a critical piece of meaningful global health work.

Each GlobeMed chapter is partnered with an international grassroots organization working to improve the health of their community. Since 2014, we have been partnered with Set Her Free, a non-profit organization in Kampala, Uganda. Set Her Free provides at-risk women and girls with the education, vocational training, and rehabilitative services necessary to lead self-determined lives. A core element of our partnership is the GrassRoots On-site Work (GROW) Internship, a yearly program where we send a team of students to work in-person at Set Her Free during the summer. This internship provides students with the opportunity to assist Set Her Free with a variety of projects and gain on-the-ground experience in grassroots global health work.

Additionally, we support Set Her Free and promote global health equity through our activities on campus throughout the school year. Two critical pieces of our programming are our fall Gala and spring Conference. These events are not only important fundraisers for Set Her Free, but also opportunities for young people like us who are passionate about public health to connect and discuss important topics in the field. We hold other events throughout the year as well, such as student volunteering opportunities, smaller fundraisers, and outreach projects with the wider D.C. community.

As of October 2022, GlobeMed HQ has officially dissolved. However, GlobeMed at GW is committed to continuing our programming and partnership with Set Her Free just as before. The sustainable relationship-building and deep learning we’ve invested in over the years will enable our partnership to continue to thrive. We look forward to years of creating community and partnership in global health!
